Country Crock Beans

Get ready...this is going to be one of your favorite recipes.

I get asked to bring these beans to every family gathering and we never get tired of them. They go great with BBQ, baked ham, pulled pork sandwiches and they are even great alone with a side salad and a roll (gluten free or regular).

This recipe can be made gluten free by choosing a gluten free sausage and gluten free beans. Read your labels. I will be using gluten free products in my blog since that's how we eat them. There is no difference in taste at all.

This recipe is revised from one I grew up with called, Cowboy Beans. I have since changed the beans and prefer to cook them in a crock pot instead of the oven. I feel the oven  really dries them out and results in a less than desirable end product, even when covered with a lid. But as an option, they can be baked at 350 for 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

Lets take a look at the ingredients:
1 lb pork sausage (I have used turkey sausage, but prefer pork for this recipe)
1 lg can Bushes Vegetarian Beans
1  15oz can red beans
1  15oz can small white beans (like navy)
1  15 oz can tomato sauce
1 small apple peeled and cored, chopped fine (any type)
2 heaping tsp minced garlic
1 Tbl chili powder
2-3 Tbl brown sugar (depending on taste, I use 2)

Brown and drain sausage. Drain all beans except Bushes Vegetarian Beans. Add all ingredients in crock pot, mix well. Cook on low for 8-10 hours, or on high for 4-5 hours. Stir occasionally. Or put all ingredients in a large casserole with lid and bake at 350 1 1/2 -2 hours.

Enjoy and don't bother freezing left overs, you will want to eat them the next day!

Serve up in mugs or bowls.
